3rd Grade - Social Studies - ThingLink

Utah Core Standard 1
Students will understand how geography influences community location and development.

Objective 1
Determine the relationships between human settlement and geography.
Identify the geographic features common to areas where human settlements exist.

Use map features to make logical inferences and describe relationships between human settlement and physical geography (e.g. population density in relation to latitude, cities' proximity to water, utilization of natural resources).

Compare the shapes and purposes of natural and human-made boundaries of cities, counties and states.

Utah Ed Tech Standard 5
Use technology tools (e.g., multimedia authoring, presentation, web tools, digital cameras, scanners) for individual and collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities to create knowledge products for audiences inside and outside the classroom. (3, 4)

ISTE Stanard 7
Global Collaborator

Students use digital tools to broaden their perspectives and enrich their learning by collaborating with others and working effectively in teams locally and globally.

Reflection:  Students will work together in pairs to create and label their own Utah maps.  They will label and write about 2 things that interest them, something that is unique to Utah.  They will then reach out to someone that is not from Utah and ask them what they identify with Utah the most.  They will then write, label, and research that subject.
I love this application.  I can see where I could use it in the classroom for history, social studies, and science everyday.  Students could use it to learn new things from around the world label and identify them within a picture, and then present what they have learned.  Everyone could research the subject and still come up with different answers to the assignment.  I have chosen Social Studies, because it is was one of my favorite things when I was in both Elementary and Jr. High schools.  My 7th grade Social Studies teacher was my favorite teacher of all times.  it tool me a couple of tries to properly embed the image, but I think that I finally have the hang of it.  Easy project that students can do, and also learn at the same time.
